Jesus Made In America Review
Just finished a review on Stephen J. Nichols' Jesus Made in America. He gets some stuff dead on right, and others he bases his argument entirely off opinion. I suggest reading the book just for perspective's sake, even if you don't agree with everything he says (and I definitely don't). So anyway, here's my critical evaluation of the book.
In Stephen J. Nichols’ book Jesus Made in America, the history of how the conception of Jesus in the minds of Americans is laid out. Nichols attempts to cover this development from the time of the Puritans right up till the production ...
Washington Post Tebow Article
Thanks to Alan this morning, an article from the Washington Post was brought to my attention. Tim Tebow, a man who I greatly respect as an athlete and as a Christian, will evidently have an ad during the Super Bowl promoting a pro-life position on abortion. I'll just get it out there, I'm 100% on board with Tebow and Mrs. Jenkins who wrote the article. It should be noted, however that the ad never says anything about abortion, Christianity, or anything that is blatantly evangelical according to Jenkins. Tebow and his mother are promoting a right to life in a ...
Colossians 2:6-15
This morning I was encouraged by a passage of Scripture that has evaded my attention for a long time. I can't remember the last time I read through Colossians, but I'm thankful for this encouragement from this morning. Here it is:
"Therefore, as you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in him, rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.
See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to ...
This Week’s Bible Study
This week at Bible Study we will be studying Romans 1:18-32. The whole book of Romans is thick. Extremely thick. Not in the physical sense, but in it's content. This week we'll talk about how we have no excuse to not recognize God as creator. In this passage Paul shows that since the creation of the world, God's invisible attributes, his eternal power and divine nature have been clearly perceived. In essence, this makes everyone accountable for themselves. Because God's existence is evident in creation we are thus without excuse. Paul talks about how although these people knew God (they ...
South Africa Day 9
Last Day June 9th 2009
This morning was a hard one. Leaving everyone behind, I will miss this place greatly. This trip has made such an impact on my life, one that has forever changed me. Today we went to the Curio. I haggled with some guys who were genuinely annoying the crap out of me trying to get me to buy some marble carvings of lions and elephants that "they carved themselves". Got a sword for myself, some little trinkets for friends, carvings, a giant carved wooden lion for mom and dad, a bone ring (so I could tell Amy ...
South Africa Day 8
This one is a long time coming, really haven't had any time whatsoever to catch up with updating the blog. Short and to the point:
June 8th, 2009
My stomach is better this morning. I slept till 8 o'clock because it was raining and its reeeeaaaalllllyyyyy cold. And we have no heat. Apart from the propane space heater, which isn't much help. Now it's snowing....what the crap? In Africa it's snowing... Wim says if the weather doesn't let up, we won't be going to Lion Park. I really hope this snow stops and the sun comes out, because I really want to ...
South Africa Day 7
Today we did church this morning. Church was supposed to start around 11am but people gradually showed and just started singing. One right after the other, someone would start a song and everyone would join in. It was awesome. Everything was accapella and it sounded beautiful. Wim taught on forgiveness from several passages and as Sana translated she would add here own 2 cents in there every now and then. After church, just like good Baptists we went to KFC. (Which happens to be the only fast food in Qwa Qwa, how ironic is that?) I had something called a ...
South Africa Day 6
This morning was a very productive one up until about 11AM. We finally go the roll up door bolted in. We ended up using some of that threaded rod we used for the fence to clamp the rails to the wall. We drilled straight through the wall and bolted that thing down. Then once the springs were tightened we started to roll it up and a wooden beam (part of the A-frame holding up the roof) kept it from rolling. A little bending, bracing, and chiseling fixed that issue and the door rolls up beautifully. Wim decided he wanted to ...
South Africa Day 5
Today was more of a workday than the rest of the days. It was physically fulfilling for me. We got up early and went to the Cashbuild to get some supplies for building the fence. On the way we stopped at a shell station to get some gas and I saw the first white people other than the ones on the trip that I've seen the whole time I've been here. They were most likely of Dutch descendance, most of the white folks here are, says Wim. While there I picked up some of my favorite foreign snack food....Jalepeno Doritos. ...
South Africa Day 4
June 4, 2009
Today was completely and entirely different from yesterday. Yesterday I was bitter and aggrivated because I couldn't figure out why I was here. I wanted to be building so bad because I thought that that was why I was here. Today we went to Lesotho (pronounced Lesutu) to the other Care Center Wim has started with a pastor named John. The ride there was crazy. I thought the roads in Mexico were bad, at least they were paved. Once you pass through the Lesotho border control, you enter the 18th century. If we had not had the LandRover ...
South Africa Day 3
June 3, 2009
Tonight I am somewhat bitter. I remember this feeling well because it is the same frustration I felt with Matt in Mexico. Albeit, this frustration is not for the same reason. Maybe it is because I have a different outlook on missions that the rest of the ladies. (no offense ladies). They get so emotional over the condition of the children's homes and their lives. (once again, no offense) I struggle tonight with accepting that emotion. In Mexico, I lived for a month and four days, as the orphans lived. I had a little extra cash to spend ...
South Africa Day 2
Sorry Debbie, like I said, stuff came up and I couldn't post each day.
June 2, 2009
Today in Qwa Qwa was rather slow paced. I slept till around 2:00am and had to get up to use the rest room and didn't get back to sleep till around 4:00am because Marvin snores like a hibernating bear. Ryan doesn't have anything on this guy. My internal clock went off at 8:45am just like it oes every morning (which is wierd because of the time difference) and I fell back asleep 5 minutes later and slept till nearly 1:00pm. By that time everyone was ...
South Africa Day 1
Since I had very limited internet access in South Africa, I didn't get to post my journals like I wanted to. So today I'm going to start with day one, and the plan is to post one journal entry each day until I've covered the whole trip. That's the plan, something will probably come up and keep me from posting on a daily basis. But anyway, here it is, the good, the bad, and the ugly of the trip to South Africa.
June 1-2/2009
We finally made it to Qwa Qwa after an hour flight to Atlanta, and an 8 and a ...
The Man on the Island
As I was preparing for my lesson tonight, I came across an article that I never really paid much mind to in Dr. Schemm's class when he gave it to us. The lesson tonight is part one of the doctrine of revelation and the article is about that infamous "man on the island" that evangelicals tend to dance around. The article is by Dr. Russell Moore and can be found on http://www.henryinstitute.org under articles and essays by the name of "The Man on the Island: Facing the Truth About those who Never Hear the Gospel". Moore comes ...
Give Me A Clean Heart Lord…
This morning, or afternoon, whichever, the lines between day and night have blurred for me over the past couple of days, I was checking Google Reader and catching up on some of the recent posts and came across this post from Amber over at http://unavitaesaminata.blogspot.com/ :
It is possible to have unforgiveness in your heart and still go to church and sing. But it is all a fake! The singing is false. You can make people sing but when people are clean you don't have to make them sing. But people will spontaneously sing from a full heart. Why? Because they ...
Encouraging Words from the Apostle
This morning I found some encouraging words from Paul in 1st Corinthians. As I was reading through chapter 10 I remembered something that a close friend always reminds me of when I face trials or temptations. Even when I was sick last week and was worrying about how I was going to get my work done in that condition, he reminded me that the Lord was the one who allowed me to get sick, and would not give me more than I could handle. Likewise this translates into temptation as well. The Lord allows his children to be tempted, but ...
What happens if they leave?
Last night Jared, Ryan, Matt, and I had the Glens over for a St. Patty's Day dinner (Corned Beef, Fried Cabbage, Mashed Potatoes, and Brats for some reason) and we got to talk with Jason about some things that I never really had though about. Jason has a way of making you think deeper about your surroundings, whats going on, and what would come to be, as do Mael and Alan. I'm thankful for this,...not many people have that ability. At Messiah, we do ecclesiology a little differently than most churches, (a more New Testament example I think personally) and ...
The non-Problem of Evil
I've though long and hard about this idea of the problem of evil (why is there evil in the world?). Last night I was reading a book called Monkey Business for a paper in American History II about the Scopes trial and the teaching of evolution vs. creation and the author commented on Darwin's thoughts about the problem of evil. He insisted that Darwin's belief on this issue was what formed his ideas in Origin of the Species. Basically, the way the author put it, Darwin saw the problem of evil one way or the other: either God could not ...
lord kill me if I don’t preach the gospel
Lecrae is by far the most edifying Christian music I think that I've ever listened to. I don't see anybody else out there today that's preaching theology with a missions and gospel focus through their music. Here's the lyrics from one of the tracks on the new cd Rebel. Tell me this doesn't make you want to get out and share the gospel...
Lord kill me If I don't preach the gospel
I'm still in my 20's- but I'll die if I got to
Already dead- so forget my flesh
I done been crossed over see the full court press
I'm a full court mess ...
To whom do we confess?
If anyone read the post about Bonhoeffer just few back than you know that I was assigned to read Life Together for my journal entries. Well today was the due date and after reading this book, I can't recommend it enough. Bonhoeffer's words clear, exact, and profound. It's amazing how he fits so much meat and meaning into so few words. The whole book is only 122 pages long but it because of the content you find yourself slowing down just to make sure you catch all that he is saying. He doesn't dance around the point that he's trying ...
Genesis 22
Ok, so I said that I would post a bit about what I've learned in Hebrew so far this semester. We've been translating Genesis 22. The more and more I learn to read and translate Biblical Hebrew the more interesting it is to do. For those of you who know how to read BH, you understand where I'm coming from. The way Hebrew narrative works most of the time is almost completely backwards from the way we talk in English. The word order is Verb-->Subject-->Object. So for instance like in Genesis 22:6, the first ...
Satisfaction in Christ
You know I hate to talk about how bad the world has gotten and how hard it is to live life as Christian in a society that is absolutely contrary to everything you believe in, but for a brief moment I'd like to explain how I've been feeling lately. It seems that everywhere I go I'm being bombarded by sin trying to force it's way on me. (And I'm sure its the same for any other Christian trying to live a righteous life.) As a man striving to keep a pure mind, pure eyes, and a pure heart, I'll admit ...
Micah 6:8
I remember a couple years back, the summer before I came to Southeastern, I went to Caswell and the theme was "Take a Hike." Well, I'm not really sure what that theme had anything to with the key passage which happened to be Micah 6:8, but I came across this verse reading this morning and realized that it had some pretty big implications. If I had to sum this chapter up in one phrase it would be: All God wants you to do is obey. Lets take a look at verses 1-8.
NAS Micah 6:1 Hear now what the LORD is ...
