May the world know us by our love.
Isaiah 43:7 “…everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
John 13:34-35 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
We have been created for the purpose of glorifying God. When we put our faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, we became new creatures, no longer saturated by the world but instead, saturated by the Kingdom of God. Jesus became our King.
Because we were created to glorify God and because we are new Kingdom-saturated people, we have a new purpose; love.
This is a time like no other in our personal histories when we who are the Church of Jesus Christ can shine the light of the glory of His gospel. We can show those who do not yet know Jesus that there is hope that they will not find in this world. We can put God’s peace that surpasses all understanding on display to a world that is anxious.
Most importantly, we can show a world that is blinded and crazed by anger what love looks like. Jesus did that. When He walked the earth, He listened patiently and then spoke the loving truth. He sought out those who lived differently and treated them with tenderness and kindness. When He came across broken people, He made them whole. When He spoke to someone, they knew He cared about them. He looked them in the eye with love in his.
Jesus told his followers to love one another JUST AS I HAVE LOVED YOU! How did Jesus love us? He did not love us by shouting, or chastising, or demoralizing, and especially not by rolling his eyes. He loved us by denying Himself and dying for us. “Though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant.” (Philippians 2:6-7)
Church, this is not our home. This is where we are for a brief amount of time for the purpose of putting Jesus Christ on display. We have an opportunity to show a lost and dying world what Jesus looks like right now in a way that we haven’t been able to before. Let’s show off His love.
