“For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. It was not because you were more in number than any other people that the Lord set his love on you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all peoples, but it is because the Lord loves you…” Deuteronomy 7:6-8 (OT)
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people…” 1 Peter 2:9-10 (NT)
When I read the verse in Deuteronomy where God said that He loves his people because He loves them I thought about the way I love my children. I love them because I love them. They didn’t do something to make me love them. And there is nothing that either one of my kids could ever do that would make me not love them. Even if they did something terrible I would still love them. I might be upset with them or disappointed in them, but I would not stop loving them.
That’s because real love flows outward. It is not about me. When you love someone it’s about them. Newborn babies show us that. Those little ones just take and take and take, and never give back (except for being adorable) and yet parents love them. Real love flows out.
And the best example of real love is God’s love. God’s love for us is perfect and complete. There is no variation in it. He doesn’t have more for some and less for others, it is perfect. In fact, because there is no variation or degree, God has the same love for us that He has for his Son, Jesus.
So, if you think you have to earn God’s love, or that you could lose it by being bad, STOP! If you find yourself doubting His love for you, BELIEVE IT! God’s perfect love flows out to those He loves perfectly. As Paul puts it, nothing can ever separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus for us. (Romans 8:39) God’s love has been poured into our hearts through His Spirit who has been given to us. If you have God’s Spirit in you, you can know that perfect love.
Knowing that God loves me because He loves me has set me free. There’s nothing I can do to get Him to love me and there’s nothing I can do to cause Him to stop loving me.
Now, all I want to do is please Him and love Him back.
