“…And you know the way to where I am going.” Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. -John 14:4-6
“For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” -2 Timothy 4:3-4
I decided several years ago to stop watching the news on television. For one thing, the things that I was hearing were disturbing and would come to my consciousness at 2:00 in the morning when darkness is most terrifying. But also, because I really could not trust that I was hearing the truth anyway.
I have discovered that in this age of technological information overload, it is impossible to escape the news, though. It is on my computer screen, it is on my phone, it is in just about every conversation. So, while I stopped deliberately watching the news, I feel that I have been able to keep up with it.
The other day I saw a headline that has me very disturbed. The headline read, Pope Francis assures atheists: You don’t have to believe in God to go to heaven. I will admit that I did not hear the pope make this statement and I will leave the reader to investigate the truth.
My concern is that we need to know what God has to say, not what a man has to say about what God has to say. Up until the year that I became a follower of Jesus I was a member of the Catholic Church, and until that year I had never read through the Bible. I listened to what the priests and the pope said and believed it to be true. When I did actually read the Bible on my own, I discovered what God had to say.
I now believe what God says to be true.
God inspired the writers of the Bible to write the truth, so He in essence has written the Bible. His Word is Truth. And Jesus, who is God, said that He is the truth. He also said that “No one comes to the Father except through Him,” which means by believing in Him and following Him. And, He gave up his life to become the way for that to happen.
There are many men and women who will say things that sound suitable to our passions. Don’t we all want everyone to go to heaven? That suits my passion. But, is that what God says? Men and women may come and they may go but the Word of God stands and it is the way for us to know the truth.
And the truth is that God so loved the world that He gave his only Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. We must believe in Jesus to go to heaven.
