Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace -Romans 8:5-6
I have read these words hundreds of times and they always sounded very holy and good. I could actually say that about all of the Bible. Reading the Bible was a good thing and when I read it, it seemed holy and good.
These days, I am reading the Bible like I’ve never read it before. Now, its words are the very sustenance of my being. Reading the Bible now is like gulping for air. I cling to it and it settles me. I search the Word of God and I find hope and joy and peace. There is a purpose and there is a good God who has things in control.
The difference between setting our mind on the flesh and setting our mind on the Spirit is so clear to me now because I see what life looks like when someone’s mind is set on the flesh. The one whose mind is set on the flesh is the one who lives as though there is no God. To set the mind on the flesh is death, which looks like worry, hatred, anger, frustration, fear, and bitterness. What does that person turn to when the world is falling into darkness? When they are worried about a virus or scared about violence in the streets, to what do they cling? Where is their foundation, what gives them hope or joy or peace? The flesh has nothing that satisfies long term. Its end is death.
But the mind that is set on the Spirit is life and peace. The Bible is the Spirit-inspired Word of God. The truth of God’s Word is the only thing that gives me the peace that surpasses all understanding. When I spend time in God’s Word, my heart is guarded in Christ Jesus. In it there is power and life. My faith comes by hearing and knowing God’s Word. Faith leads to life.
The Bible is God’s Word to us. It’s His gift, His way of showing us Himself and His story. His Word is powerful and leads us to life. What a gift He has given us in His Word. The God of the universe had His story written down for such a time as this when the world seems out of control. Now is the time to seek the Truth and the only place to find it is in the Bible, the Word of God. His Truth will guard you and keep you and set you free.
For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal -2 Corinthians 4:17-18
